What makes us unique
Besides DNA?
Appearance? We were born into race and culture. We may have a certain distinctive feature but no person has a completely unique appearance.
It’s fun to believe in doppelgängers, don’t you think?
Names? Our names had been inspired by a lot of things around us. Name it.
Character? Personality? You may be brave and strong but you’re not the only one. You may be weak and fragile but you’re not the only one. You got a certain personality trait? I’m certain one of your neighbors got that too.
You might be the product of your environment but definitely, there are people who were born and raised the same way you were.
Problems? There were times when we think why we were given the problems we have? Why us? — we ask. This makes us special, right?
Of all the people who came to this world before us, I wonder if nobody had experienced the problems we’re having today?
There’s a reason why a ton of books were already written on how to live, how to find happiness and what-not. From today and billion years ago.
So what really makes us unique?
Maybe it’s the sum of our parts that makes us different from one another.
But do we really aim to be unique? We tend to want to stand out and be known in our circles.
On the other hand, isn’t it also nice to be with the crowd? To find that there is a shared experience among us, whether in our strengths, struggles or stories.
We may seek to be seen as different, but at the same time, we crave the comfort of knowing others walk similar paths.
Perhaps our true uniqueness is in how we navigate both—finding our place in the crowd while holding onto the things that make us, us.
